Same-Day Crowns
When a tooth needs a crown, digital imaging and in-office fabrication can often complete the restoration in a single visit, without a temporary crown or a second appointment.
What is a same-day crown?
A same-day crown is a custom ceramic restoration designed, milled, and placed during one appointment. Instead of sending impressions to a laboratory and wearing a temporary crown for one to two weeks, the tooth is prepared, scanned, and restored before you leave.
Same-day treatment is not appropriate for every tooth. Your dentist will confirm whether the damage, bite, and remaining tooth structure allow a chairside crown, or whether a conventional laboratory crown is the better option.
How the visit works
Preparation
The tooth is shaped to make room for the crown. Local anesthetic is used so the area stays comfortable.
Digital scan
A digital impression captures the prepared tooth and bite. There is no tray of impression material for most cases.
Design and mill
The crown is designed for fit, colour, and function, then milled from a ceramic block while you wait.
Placement
The finished crown is checked for bite and appearance, then bonded or cemented into place before you go home.
Same-day vs laboratory crowns
Both options restore strength and appearance. A same-day crown avoids a temporary restoration and a return visit. A laboratory crown may still be recommended when a more complex shade match, bridge, or material is needed.
If a same-day crown is not the right choice, we will discuss a conventional crown or bridge instead.
